The Vikos Gorge in Epirus, the world's deepest canyon relative to its width, contains a side ravine near Monodendri known as "Katarameni Gkremada" — the Cursed Drop. The ravine is said to be the site where, in the 17th century, Ottoman authorities executed an entire village of 340 people accused of hiding a rebel klephtic band.
Three hikers disappeared in the area in 1978, 1994, and 2007, with their bodies never recovered despite extensive searches. The Greek Mountaineering Club has placed a warning sign at the ravine's mouth, though the danger is listed only as "unspecified." Local shepherds drive their flocks wide around the entrance even in summer.
