The Sea Serpent of the Corinthian Gulf

The Corinthian Gulf has been the site of persistent sea monster sightings since antiquity. Ancient sailors called it "the Hydra's cousin" and left offerings at the Temple of Poseidon before crossing. The captain of a ferry between Antirio and Rio filed an official maritime incident report in 1974 describing an object "like a serpentine neck and head, six meters above the waterline" that paced the vessel for nearly two minutes before submerging.

Fishermen from Galaxidi and Nafpaktos speak of a creature they call the "Megalo Fidi" — the Great Snake — that surfaces in the deep channel between the two bridges. Several incidents of fishing nets shredded from below with no propeller damage have been logged at the coast guard station in Patras since 1990.
