The Striges of Mount Pelion

Mount Pelion, the mythical home of the centaurs, harbors a sinister legend in its dense chestnut forests. The Striges are blood-drinking female demons from ancient Greek belief — part woman, part owl — that prey on newborns and sleeping travelers. Unlike vampires, they enter through cracks in walls or down chimneys as wisps of dark smoke.

In the villages of Vizitsa and Milies, old women still hang thorny branches of wild rose above cradles and windows each April. A retired schoolteacher from Tsagarada documented 23 separate accounts from villagers born before 1940 who claimed childhood encounters with the creatures. Hikers on the E4 path between Chania and Portaria have reported hearing a high-pitched owl call that "speaks words" at dusk.
