The Black Dog of Mount Olympus

Mount Olympus, home of the gods in Greek mythology, has its own modern mystery: a large black dog that has been reported by hikers on the trails above 2,000 metres since at least the 1950s. The creature — described as the size of a Great Dane but entirely black with no collar — appears alone on rocky ridges at altitude, watches hikers from a distance, and disappears when approached. Unlike a normal dog, it leaves no tracks in snow or loose soil.

The Hellenic Alpine Club hut on Spilios Agapitos at 2,100 metres has a logbook in which multiple wardens have noted the creature's appearance. One entry from 1977 reads: "Black dog again on the ridge above. Third time this summer. Followed two hikers from below treeline to within 200 metres of the summit refuge, then was gone." Locals in Litochoro at the mountain's base call it "O Filakas" — The Guardian. Ancient tradition held that the approaches to Olympus were watched by a hound of the gods that turned back those who were not worthy to ascend.
