The Accursed Monastery of Kaisariani

The 11th-century Kaisariani Monastery on the slopes of Mount Hymettus has a hidden curse attached to its eastern wall. According to monastic records, a monk named Chrysanthos was walled alive into the eastern foundation in 1453 — the year Constantinople fell — as an act of sanctification. His dying words were that anyone who dismantled his wall would invite catastrophe upon Athens itself.

During the Nazi occupation, German engineers attempted to demolish the eastern wing to build a supply depot. Work was halted after three workers died in separate accidents within a week. The wall has never been touched since. Hikers describe a zone about 40 meters east of the building where compasses spin without reason and dogs refuse to enter.
