The Unsinkable Shipwreck of Hydra

Off the eastern coast of Hydra island, below the sea cliff near the Lighthouse of Zourvas, lies the wreck of a vessel that local fishermen call "the ship that cannot sink." The vessel — a wooden caique of approximately 15 metres — sank in 1953 during a sudden storm that killed all four crew members. What makes it remarkable is that it has never settled to the sea floor in the 70 years since its sinking: fishermen, divers, and tourist boats report it drifting at a consistent depth of 4 to 6 metres below the surface, moving against currents, appearing in different positions on different days.

Marine biologists from the University of Athens who surveyed the wreck in 1998 noted that despite being wooden and over 40 years submerged, the hull showed no biological growth — no algae, no barnacles, no marine organisms of any kind. The vessel's interior was described by divers as "perfectly dry-looking," as though the wood repelled water rather than absorbed it. The captain's logbook was found sitting open on the chart table, its pages dry and legible. It was not recovered.
