The Egnatia Odos, Greece's main east-west motorway, has been the site of a persistent vanishing hitchhiker legend since the motorway's completion in 2009. Truck drivers on the section between Alexandroupoli and Komotini report picking up a young woman in a white dress who asks to be taken "to Xanthi to find her family." She sits silently in the cab, and when the driver arrives at the Xanthi exit and turns to speak to her, she has vanished.
A variant of the legend identifies the hitchhiker as a victim of a fatal accident during construction in 2003, when a female worker fell from an overpass near the Iasmos junction. Over 40 separate accounts have been collected by a paranormal research group based in Kavala.
