The Time Loop Road of Mount Vermio

Written by Unknown5/25/20261 min readView on map0 comments

On the mountain road between Naoussa and the Seli ski resort on Mount Vermio, drivers have reported a recurring phenomenon since the 1970s: a section of road approximately 3 kilometres long where vehicles emerge at the start of the section with no recollection of having driven through it, having lost between 20 and 45 minutes of time. The phenomenon is always reported on the same stretch — between the second and third hairpin bends above the 800-metre elevation mark.

A documentary filmmaker from Thessaloniki, Aris Kontopoulos, spent three winters investigating the phenomenon in 2007–2009. He collected 31 first-hand accounts, including two from police officers who had been radioed during the missing time period and responded but have no memory of the response. His documentary was never broadcast after the production company's offices suffered a complete hard drive failure on the day of final editing. Kontopoulos maintains a website with witness testimonies that continues to receive new submissions.
