Among the monks of Mount Athos, there circulates the story of the "Phantom Kelion" — a hermit's cell that appears on the eastern face of the mountain, visible from the sea, only during the week before Easter. Monks who have attempted to reach it on foot find the path ends at a sheer cliff with no monastery visible.
Fishermen from Ouranoupoli have documented the phenomenon photographically since the 1990s, with at least 14 separate photographs showing a white structure on the cliff face that corresponds to no registered monastery on the Athos registry. The legend holds that the kelion is inhabited by a monk who has lived there since the fall of Constantinople in 1453, sustained by divine grace, awaiting a prophecy that the city will be reclaimed.
