The Screaming Well of Palamidi Fortress

The Palamidi fortress rising 216 metres above Nafplio was used as a prison for centuries, most notoriously housing the revolutionary hero Theodoros Kolokotronis in 1833. In its lower courtyard stands a sealed well that guards and visitors have described as a source of muffled screaming — not constant, but erupting suddenly in the hours before midnight, lasting between 30 seconds and two minutes, then stopping as abruptly as it began.

The fortress garrison records from the Venetian period (1711–1715) include three separate entries describing "voices rising from the earth in the inner yard, as of men in torment." A structural survey conducted in 1998 found the well to be dry and sealed with a stone cap since at least the 18th century. Acoustical engineers proposed that wind channelling through the fortress walls could explain the phenomenon, but the sounds have been recorded on nights of complete calm. Night guards at the fortress routinely request transfers after their first month of service.
