The Nun of Dafni Monastery

Written by Unknown5/25/20261 min readView on map0 comments

The Byzantine monastery of Dafni, west of Athens, served as a lunatic asylum from 1883 to 1972. After the asylum closed, workers renovating the mosaic floors began reporting the apparition of a woman in a dark habit gliding through the cloisters at night.

Security guards employed during the 1990s UNESCO restoration refused to work after dark. One guard, Petros Manolis, filed an official report describing a figure he saw walking through a locked iron door. The figure paused, turned to face him, and then dissolved into the 11th-century mosaic of the Pantocrator on the dome above. Modern investigators have recorded significant EMF anomalies near the north transept.
