The Ghost Soldiers of Thermopylae

The pass of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartans held off the Persian army in 480 BC, is said to be permanently haunted. Shepherds and night travelers along the narrow coastal road between Lamia and Kamena Vourla have reported seeing phantom soldiers in archaic armor marching in tight formation just before dawn.

Greek military cadets who trained at a camp near the Hot Gates memorial in the 1960s documented multiple sightings in their unit logs. The sound of sandaled footsteps on gravel, shield clashing, and a low rhythmic chant have been recorded at the monument. Some claim the soldiers march every year on the anniversary of the last stand.
